Masterclass: Research with marginalised groups
The masterclass will take place at REHPA, Nyborg Hospital, Vestergade 17, 5800 Nyborg in Meeting Room 3 the 5. November from 10.00-15.00 – entrance via the door to the left just before the main entrance.
Expectations of Participants
This masterclass is intended for researchers who are interested in critically reflecting on their own and others’ research practices through the lens of critical rehabilitation studies.
Critical rehabilitation studies extends the focus beyond questions of implementation (how rehabilitation should be understood and practised effectively) to also examine the tensions, dilemmas, and power relations that shape rehabilitation research and practice. The aim is not to critique rehabilitation as an ideal, but to strengthen research and practice through critical reflection on the complex realities that emerge when rehabilitation ideals are translated into practice.
A particular focus of the masterclass will be on conducting research with marginalised groups, including Māori, frail older adults, and ethnicised, racialised, gendered, and other structurally marginalised populations. We will explore methodological approaches to conducting more inclusive research and discuss the ethical, practical, and epistemological dilemmas involved in ensuring that diverse perspectives and lived experiences are meaningfully represented in research.
Participants are expected to read two articles in advance of the masterclass.
As part of the registration process, participants are asked to write up to half a page about their own research interests within rehabilitation and related research concerning and involving marginalized groups.
The text will be used both to help form participant groups and to inform Nicola Kayes about the participants’ backgrounds and research interests.
Participants
The participants are researchers with an interest in critical rehabilitation research and related fields.
We expect approximately 20 participants.
Places are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
Programme (tentative)
The masterclass will focus on research with marginalised groups and the methodological and conceptual approaches that support more inclusive research. Consistent with critical rehabilitation studies, participants will be encouraged to critically examine the assumptions and practices that shape research processes.

About Nicola Kayes
Nicola M. Kayes is a New Zealand health psychologist, associate dean at the AUT Person Centred Rehabilitation Research Centre, and professor of rehabilitation at Auckland University (AUT).
